Established in 2006 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Government Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital (GAMCH), Nagercoil, is the first and only state-run Ayurvedic medical college in Tamil Nadu. 1. Course Overview

The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), also known as “Ayurvedacharya,” is a professional undergraduate degree that focuses on the holistic healing principles of Ayurveda. The curriculum at GAMCH Nagercoil covers the Tridosha theory (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and Ashtanga Ayurveda while integrating modern medical subjects such as Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Surgery. The program is designed to produce physicians capable of integrated diagnosis and therapeutic management using traditional and scientific methods.

2. Course Duration & Structure

The BAMS program is a 5.5-year integrated professional course, strictly following NCISM regulations:

  • Academic Phase: 4.5 Years of intensive theoretical study and laboratory practicals divided into professional terms.

  • Compulsory Internship: 1 Year of mandatory rotatory residential internship. Students receive hands-on clinical training at the college’s attached 100-bed multispecialty hospital, managing diverse cases in both Ayurvedic and modern medical wards.
